Kansas has approximately 35,800 active oil and gas wells, reflecting over 150 years of production history. Many are conventional vertical wells in the Central Kansas Uplift and Hugoton Gas Area. The state has one of the highest well densities per square mile in the US.

What is the Hugoton Gas Field?

The Hugoton Gas Area in southwestern Kansas is one of the largest natural gas fields in North America, spanning Stevens, Grant, Morton, Haskell, and Seward counties. Wells here are identified using the Sixth Principal Meridian PLSS grid.
