The rectangular survey system is the same as the Public Land Survey System — the two names refer to the same federal land division framework established by the Land Ordinance of 1785. The term "rectangular" emphasizes the geometric approach of the system: land is divided into rectangles (nominally squares) at each level of the hierarchy, from the 24-mile-square initial survey blocks down to the 40-acre quarter-quarter sections.

The word "rectangular" distinguishes this system from alternatives like metes-and-bounds (which traces irregular boundaries using bearings and distances) and the Spanish and Mexican land grant system (which used irregular grants tied to geographic features). By creating a regular rectangular grid independent of topography, the PLSS made it possible to describe, sell, and administer vast quantities of public land without requiring a surveyor to visit every parcel before it could be sold or homesteaded.

The rectangular geometry of the system has shaped American culture, agriculture, and urban planning. Cities founded on federal land often show the township-and-range grid in their street layouts — a north-south, east-west grid of blocks that follows the survey rather than the natural contours of the land. Agricultural fields across the Midwest are square or rectangular because fences and fields were built along section lines. Even the size of city blocks in many western cities traces back to the 40-acre or 160-acre PLSS units that were subdivided into urban lots.

When surveyors, title professionals, or software systems refer to "rectangular survey" coordinates, they mean the same PLSS township-range-section system. The two terms are used interchangeably in land records, statutes, and professional literature.
