Guide meridians are north-south survey lines that extend from standard parallels toward the next standard parallel to the north. They are established at 24-mile intervals east and west of the principal meridian and serve as supplementary reference lines for the PLSS grid. Their primary purpose is to manage the distortion caused by converging meridians on the curved surface of the Earth.
Range lines — the north-south boundaries between columns of townships — are true meridians. As true meridians, they converge toward the poles. Over a distance of 24 miles north from the baseline, this convergence causes the north end of a 24-mile-wide block of townships to be noticeably narrower than the south end. If this convergence were allowed to continue uncorrected, townships far from the baseline would become severely distorted.
At each standard parallel, guide meridians are restarted. A new guide meridian begins exactly 24 miles east or west of the principal meridian as measured along the standard parallel, regardless of how much convergence occurred in the previous 24-mile tier. This "reset" keeps the overall grid from accumulating too much distortion. The small discontinuity at each standard parallel — where the new guide meridian is slightly offset from the old range line below it — is called a "jog" or "offset" and is visible on aerial maps of the western United States as a consistent feature of rural roads that follow section lines.
Guide meridians are labeled by number and direction from the principal meridian (e.g., "First Guide Meridian East"). They appear on BLM plat maps and are important reference features when interpreting historical survey notes or understanding why roads and property lines make sudden jogs in otherwise straight alignments.
